Japan has become one of the most attentive places in the world to follow Major League Baseball. Every pitch Yoshinobu Yamamoto throws and every swing Shohei Ohtani takes is watched closely in Tokyo, and the cards that record those moments are collected with the same care. If you are looking for MLB cards in Japan, here is a calm, practical guide to buying well.
Start with what the card records
The most meaningful cards tend to mark a specific moment. Topps Now cards, printed shortly after an event, are a good example. One in our collection captures Kazuma Okamoto joining the Toronto Blue Jays, under the headline "Japanese Slugger Joins Defending AL Champions," graded CGC Pristine 10:
Another marks the 2018 Rookie of the Year awards for Shohei Ohtani and Ronald Acuña Jr., graded PSA 10:
When a card is tied to a real moment, its story is easy to explain and easy to treasure.
Understand grading
A graded card has been examined by an independent grading company, such as PSA, SGC, CGC or Beckett, and sealed in a protective case called a slab. The label shows the grade and a certification number, which you can look up on the grading company's own website.
At Tokyo Sports Cards, the grading company and grade are written in every product title, and graded listings show photos of the slab label and the back. You can browse every graded card in one place here:
Autographs: look for certification
With signed cards, authenticity matters most. We mainly carry officially licensed autograph cards and cards with third-party autograph authentication. A good example is Yoshinobu Yamamoto's 2025 Topps Chrome Black Super Futures autograph, graded PSA 9 MINT.:

Sealed boxes, including Leaf
Some collectors would rather open the packs themselves. Leaf Trading Cards is known for autograph-focused baseball products, including Leaf Metal, Metal Draft, Electrum, Vivid and Optichrome. Our Leaf boxes are factory sealed and sourced directly from Leaf. They are held in our Tokyo warehouse and ship from there:
Please note that sealed products are not eligible for returns or refunds.
Follow the players you love
Many collectors in Japan build around one player or team. To make that easier, we have a category for Shohei Ohtani cards and another for Los Angeles Dodgers cards:
Buy from a shop you can verify
Before you buy, check a few things:
- A licence. In Japan, sellers of secondhand goods need a 古物商 (secondhand dealer) licence. Ours is No. 303252615718, issued by the Tokyo Metropolitan Public Safety Commission.
- Real photographs. Look at the actual card, not a stock image.
- A clear return policy. At Tokyo Sports Cards, if a card does not match its description, you may request a full refund within 48 hours of delivery. Please contact us before sending anything back; return shipping is paid by the buyer. Sealed products cannot be returned or refunded.
- Clear shipping terms. We ship from our shop within 72 hours of payment confirmation, and delivery time depends on the carrier.
A quiet way to collect
Buying MLB cards in Japan does not need to be hurried. Take time with the photographs, read the grade, check the certification number, and choose cards that mean something to you. When you have a question about a card, please send us a message through the shop's contact form.
